Within the scientific skeleton of truth, religious meaning attempts to flourish, often by denying the scientific framework itself - rather like sawing off the branch where you cheerily perch. The disgust is mutual because modern science gleefully denies virtually all the basic tenets of religion in general. According to the typical view of modern science, religion is not much more than a holdover from the childhood of humanity, with about as much reality as, say, Santa Claus. Whether the religious claims are more literal (Moses parting the Red Sea) or more mystical (religion invovlves direct spiritual experience) modern science denies them all, simply because there is no credible empirical evidence for any of them.

About this quote

What does it mean?
Religion often struggles to exist within a scientific worldview by rejecting science itself, which is self-defeating. Science equally rejects core religious tenets due to lack of empirical evidence.
In plain terms
Trying to keep religion alive by denying science is like cutting off the branch you sit on.
What can you take from it?
Rejecting the framework that supports your position undermines your own stance.

Where it applies

  • debates on existence
  • conflict between worldviews
  • evaluating claims

Putting it to work

  • assess evidence objectively
  • avoid self-defeating arguments
  • compare epistemologies

Questions to consider

  • How can one hold both scientific and religious views without contradiction?
  • Is empirical evidence the only valid way to know truth?

Another view

Science does not always deny all aspects of subjective experience or meaning.
