In the outside world, all forms of intelligence, whether of sound or sight, have been reduced to the form of varying currents in an electric circuit in order that they may be transmitted. Inside the human frame exactly the same sort of process occurs. Must we always transform to mechanical movements in order to proceed from one electrical phenomenon to another? It is a suggestive thought, but it hardly warrants prediction without losing touch with reality and immediateness.
About this quote
- What does it mean?
- Bush compares human neural processes to electrical circuits but cautions against over-mechanizing biological understanding.
- In plain terms
- Human brains use electrical signals like machines, but we shouldn't assume they work exactly the same.
- What can you take from it?
- Draw analogies between biology and machines but stay grounded in reality.

Putting it to work
Questions to consider
- Can machines truly model human thought?
- What makes biological systems unique?
Another view
Reducing human experience to circuits ignores subjective consciousness.
